Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880 - 1909) is one of the most intriguing Dutch Symbolists of the fin de siècle. His prematurely curtailed life left behind a small but remarkable oeuvre, consisting almost entirely of highly refined drawings in which elegant linework meets a richly symbolic imagination.​

Influenced by figures such as Aubrey Beardsley, Ferdinand Hodler and Jan Toorop, De Nerée developed a distinctly personal visual language. His work explores themes of identity, eroticism, and gender, articulated through a symbolist idiom in which the inner life takes centre stage.

Carel de Nerée’s work was recently celebrated in the exhibition Carel de Nerée tot Babberich, Different from the Others at Dordrechts Museum. The exhibition was accompanied by a biography and catalog by expert Sander Bink.
