Bob Scholte Fine Art will be exhibiting at PAN Amsterdam 2026 • Stand D • 1 - 9 November
Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880–1909) ranks among the most intriguing Dutch Symbolists of the fin de siècle. His small and rare oeuvre consists almost entirely of highly refined drawings, making him one of the most sought-after artists within Dutch Symbolism.
Influenced by figures such as Aubrey Beardsley, Ferdinand Hodler and Jan Toorop, De Nerée developed an elegant, decadent, and distinctly personal visual language. His work explores themes of identity, eroticism, and gender, articulated through a Symbolist idiom in which the inner life takes centre stage.
His work was recently brought back into focus in the exhibition Carel de Nerée tot Babberich: Different from the Others at Dordrechts Museum.
Bob Scholte Fine Art specialises in Carel de Nerée tot Babberich and regularly has works by the artist available. We also advise and broker acquisitions, sales, and valuations.
