Additional information:
In Muurpeper, Schmid-Wittenberg turns her gaze towards the ground, where different succulents and flowering wall peppers form a colourful whole. With a keen sense of form and colour, she brings the simplicity of nature into view. Fresh green and blue-grey tones contrast subtly with the warm colours of the stones, while the carefully arranged plants create an almost decorative rhythm.
Wera Schmid-Wittenberg was a Russian-born artist who settled in the Netherlands. She took painting lessons from Jan Wittenberg, whom she later married. His influence is clearly recognisable in her paintings, woodcuts and lithographs, although she developed a quiet visual language of her own. Her oeuvre is characterised by restrained design and close attention to nature.
