Additional information:
Nola Hatterman was a Dutch actress, painter and designer. During the 1930s, she became involved with progressive Surinamese intellectuals in the Netherlands, including Anton de Kom. In 1953, she moved to Suriname to teach a new generation of Surinamese artists.
Identity and Suriname became central themes in Hatterman’s work. She regarded art as a means of challenging discrimination and colonialism. Her work reflects the shared postcolonial heritage of Suriname and the Netherlands. She also played an important role in the development of modern Surinamese art.
After her death in 1984, former students established the Nola Hatterman Institute. It was later renamed The Nola Hatterman Art Academy. Hatterman’s work is represented in major Dutch collections. Recent acquisitions include works by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, while her paintings are also included in the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
