Additional information:
Jan Toorop (1858-1928), born in Poerworedjo, Java, became one of the most influential Dutch artists of his generation, with an international career. His work moved through different styles, from the Hague School and Pointillism to Symbolism. An important turning point came in Katwijk, where the rugged North Sea coast and fishing community had a profound impact on him.
Toorop first visited Katwijk in the summer of 1887, where he began developing his characteristic linework. Fishermen, their families and everyday coastal life became central themes in his work, which combines realism and Symbolism, as seen in The Three Brides and Zeeland Peasant Women. Alongside his work in Katwijk, he played a key role in the Nieuwe Kunst (Art Nouveau), creating iconic designs such as the Delftsche Slaolie poster.
Ary from Katwijk aan Zee (1902) is a beautiful example of his linework and skill as a portraitist. Executed in charcoal, the work captures the inner strength of its subject with minimal means and shows Toorop’s more naturalistic style. Modest in size, it offers an insight into Toorop’s social engagement.
