Additional information:
The etching Autumn Garden is an exceptionally rare and refined example from Jan Mankes’s graphic oeuvre. It reflects his enduring focus on stillness, nature and detail. The intimate autumn garden is carefully composed, with tall grasses, bare trees and a glimpse of a farmyard in the distance. The delicate lines and subtle attention to texture reflect Mankes’s keen powers of observation. The work conveys his search for a quiet and timeless reality.
Jan Mankes was a Dutch artist known for his landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He was born in Meppel and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. His personal approach to nature and his delicate treatment of the world around him earned him the enduring reputation of being one of the Netherlands’ most contemplative painters.
Mankes died of tuberculosis in 1920 at the age of 30. Despite his short career, his work continues to be highly regarded. Drawings and paintings by Mankes only rarely appear on the market. The majority of his oeuvre is held in Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum, Museum Belvédère, Museum MORE, Museum Arnhem and Museum Mohlmann.
