Additional information:
Adriaan Herman Gouwe (1875–1965), born in Alkmaar, left behind his successful career in the Netherlands in 1927. During a stay in the south of France, he read an article about Tahiti and decided to move there. On December 14, 1927, he arrived in Papeete, the capital of Tahiti, where he would live and work until his death in 1965.
Gouwe’s Tahitian period marked an important transformation in his work. Freed from the constraints of the European art world, he found in Tahiti the peace and creative freedom he had been seeking. He developed a bright, colorful, and expressive style, further refining the luminist palette of his earlier work. The local population and lush landscapes became his principal subjects, resulting in distinctive works that captured the simplicity and exotic beauty of the island. This early Impressionist painting is an excellent example of his work from this period.
In 1959, Gouwe briefly returned to the Netherlands for exhibitions in Maastricht and at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, where his Tahitian works were enthusiastically received. After several months, he returned to Tahiti.
