Additional information:
This finely rendered pencil drawing by Marie de Jonge depicts a lady in profile, captured in a restrained yet powerful pose. Through refined linework and subtle shading, De Jonge not only captures the sitter’s physical features with precision, but also conveys something of her inner world.
The interplay of light and shadow creates a beautiful sense of depth and texture, visible both in the face and in the carefully rendered folds of the clothing. The work has the character of the academic tradition, while at the same time displaying a remarkable sense of directness and honesty.
Marie de Jonge received her artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and continued her studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where she was taught by, among others, Nicolaas van der Waay.
A refined and characterful portrait in which technique and expression come together harmoniously.
