Information:

This sensitive portrait of a Javanese woman is characteristic of Betsy Westendorp-Osieck’s work during her journey through the Dutch East Indies in 1930. It shows her characteristic command of line and tone, combined with subtle blue pastel accents that envelop the sitter and give the image rhythm and depth. The loose, assured chalk lines suggest form and shadow without resorting to excessive detail, directing attention entirely to the facial expression of the seated woman.

The artist’s personal engagement with her models is apparent in the restrained, almost meditative presence of this portrait. It is a testament to Westendorp-Osieck’s attention to human dignity and cultural identity, far removed from the exoticising gaze that often characterised the work of her contemporaries.

Westendorp-Osieck, a member of the Amsterdam Joffers, an influential group of female artists, was known for her naturalistic and Impressionist approach to still lifes and portraits. Her travels outside Europe, including to China, Cambodia, Ceylon and Sri Lanka, inspired drawings and pastels in which encounters with other cultures played a central role.
