Angelo Jank, son of painter and stage designer Christian Jank (1833–1888), studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich from 1891 to 1896. Shortly after graduating he joined the Munich Secession, an influential movement that promoted modernism and renewal in art.
From 1896 onwards Jank supplied illustrations to the leading magazine Die Jugend, an important platform for German Art Nouveau. Alongside his work as an illustrator, he taught at the Women’s Academy of the Munich Artists’ Association from 1899 to 1907, and in 1922 was appointed professor of animal painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich.
Although Jank later became especially known for his equestrian scenes, his early work displays a greater diversity of subjects. The drawing Houses along the Tauber River near Rothenburg, executed in 1899, belongs to this early period and demonstrates his exceptional talent as a draughtsman and landscape artist.
Seen from a bird’s-eye perspective, the work presents an idyllic view of houses along the Tauber River just outside the town walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The composition is lively and dynamic, with undulating lines subtly and expressively describing roof tiles, trees and the meandering river.
Jank’s skilful use of brown and black chalk, enhanced by white accents on the plastered walls and even on pigeons perched on one of the roofs, creates a strong sense of depth and texture. This technical refinement is combined with a warm and inviting atmosphere that emphasises the harmony between man and nature.
Made shortly after Jank completed his training, this drawing reflects both the influence of Romantic landscape art and an affinity with realism. At the same time, it demonstrates his ability to capture atmosphere and detail with great sensitivity.
